Welcome to Our Crowley Family History Website

While this web page primarily focuses on my main paternal Y-DNA lineage, it also serves as a launching point to get to data about all my paternal and maternal lineages ... because ... in a word, they all come together in me and my younger siblings, and our surname is Crowley. So, please do not be suprised if in some cases you get bounced off to another web page for a specific surname that has a lot of its very own data, such as is the case for the Dashiell's (de Chiel).

Our paternal roots have been traced only as far back as the immigrant named Jeffrey Cro(w)ley who lived in colonial Virginia in the early to mid 1700's. Beyond that we know of several different speculative backgrounds for Jeffrey. None of them are confirmed, however. We have done the 67-marker and so-called Deep Sub-clade tests at ftdna.com. The 111 marker upgrade results are now pending. There are several other "cuzzin's" that match us in our match list at FTDNA. and I believe all of them can trace their lines back to either our Benjamin Sr Crowley or his brother Samuel Crowley, both sons of Jeffrey.

Our sub-clade has been called the "Frisian II clade" -- but I stress that this is speculative and totally unconfirmed. The highest concentration of our R1b2a2a1a1a1 haplogroup (2011 nomenclature), also known by the marker R-U198 or S29 (I am now R-FGC12307 according to Big-Y), is found primarily in the Netherlands (2.1%), with Germany (1.8%), Russia (1.8%), England (1.4%) and Denmark (0.9%) following. The Frisian people are believed to have migrated down the Baltic and out into the North sea coastal areas in ancient times, finally settling in the Frisian Islands that lie in northern Netherlands, northwest Germany and southern Denmark. These could also be considered Anglo-Saxon (Visigothic) regions, however. The mutation R-U198 may date from about 1,800 to 3,000 years ago, and only these small example proportions of the marker have been detected, making it a relatively rare haplogroup. R-U198/S29 has a special study group which you can probably find by searching the internet if you are interested. It is run by administrators Sloane and Meeks.

Tags Are Surnames

The "Tags" list in the right navigation column contains most all of our currently known Family Surnames.

Clicking each tag should jump to the top of its specific Family Surnames section where summaries of data about that family surname may be found.

Ancestral Homelands

While the Y-DNA discussion above suggests some ideas of our ancestral beginnings that do not on the surface appear to be Irish, it is worth taking a moment to pass on other ideas from family stories, legends, &c for what they may be worth. Our Crowley ancestor Benjamin Sr Crowley had another son named Benjamin Jr Crowley who migrated to Crowley Ridge, Arkansas. This Benjamin was supposedly known as "the big Irishman". It may be that the Irish ancestry came from his mother's or his grandmother's or his gr grandmother's side or some earlier maternal or paternal side of the family -- if not from Jeffrey Crowley, himself.

When each of the Y-DNA matching "cuzzin's" I mentioned above began their FTDNA accounts they had to state where they thought their family originated from. At least half of them put down Ireland. Apparently, just like with my family, they had always been told that their family originated in Ireland. The other half put down either British Isles or United Kingdom.

My wife and I both subscribe to the "most American's are mutts" theory. By American we mean all of North, Central and South America, too. The colonists came from many parts of the globe to this hemisphere. They mated with whomever they pleased or with whomever would have them for the most part. In the early days that often meant that they intermixed with the indiginous peoples as well. So, if you look at our complete family heritage you will find that we descend from a whole host of original countries, including our own.

Here is a sampling of some of the known or suggested ancestral homelands:

Ayres - males from Scotland mixed with indigenous native women
Beatty - Mary Beatty's parents came from county Down, Ulster, Ireland
Benge - haplogroup either I1 or I2b1 (suggests Scots-Scandinavian?)
Bobo - Bobo, Beaubois, Beaubeau: Huguenots from France to Virginia
Cannon - Ann Cannon, born 1639 Yorkshire, England
Crowley - British Isles somewhere, haplogroup tested R-FGC12307/R-U198/S29
Dashiell - de Chiel from north of Lyon, France to near Edinburgh, Scotland
Day - the immigrant Nicholas Day Sr came from Wales to Maryland
Gallman - from Mettmenstetten, a village near Zurich, Switzerland
Geiger - from Widnau-Diepoldsau, Walkreis, Rheintal, St. Gallen, Switzerland
Hall - two Irish Hall brothers married Black Dutch Williams sisters
Lewis - from Wales
McCurdy - from Isles of Arran&Bute in Scotland to Ulster, Ireland
McKinley - from Co., Monaghan and Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland
McNatt - first from Scotland thence poss. briefly to Ulster, Ireland
McQuillen - from Ulster, Ireland
Owen - from Wales, Y-DNA haplogroup tested J2a1 (Greece, Turkey, E.Med.)
Stewart - from Isles of Arran&Bute in Scotland to Ulster, Ireland
Tate - descent from a Scot immigrant to colonial Virginia
Williams - Black Dutch (which in Jackson Co, AL meant Cherokee)
Wilson - Esther Wilson (m in Clougher, Co. Tyrone, Ireland 1743)
Wozencraft - from Wales (originally, poss. Anglo-Saxon or Palatines?)

We were always told that we were primarily Scots, Irish, English, French, and Welsh. And they weren't that far off, actually. They missed the Swiss side, though. Oh, and our Scandinavian families such as: Anderson, Benson and Swanson.

AYRES

This is the TOP_AYRES section.

OUR AYRES-WRIGHT FAMILY

On my mother's side of the family...
I have 254++ ancestors including the [128] gr gr gr gr gr grandparents level.
So assuming that Mary "Polly" Williams had one full-blooded Cherokee parent
then I would have 1/254th Cherokee blood. But if Mary was only 1/4 Cherokee
then I would have ~1/500th Cherokee blood quantum just as the saying goes...

"There is no such thing as 'part-Cherokee.'
Either you're Cherokee or you’re not.
It isn't the quantity of Cherokee blood in your veins that is important, but
the quality of it . . . your pride in it. I have seen full-bloods who have
virtually no idea of the great legacy entrusted to their care. Yet, I have seen
people with as little as 1/500th blood quantum who inspire the spirits of their
ancestors because they make being Cherokee a proud part of their everyday
life."
-- Jim Pell: Principal Chief of the North Alabama Cherokee Tribe

But if our Wright-Ayres family also has Cherokee blood which it probably
does (and/or Catawba, Creek, &c) then the quantum increases, accordingly.

BEARD

This is the TOP_BEARD section.

OUR BEARD FAMILY
Mary L. Beard (b 1812) was the wife of Benjamin Hardy (b 1808). Her father, was probably not, Willis Beard (b 1798), or any of his probable brothers George W. (b 1801), John (b 1804), Burrell B. (b 1807), William B. Beard (b 1810), who all lived in Humphreys and Perry Co., Tennessee; but, may have been James or William, both common names of sons of these probable siblings. Mary may have been their younger sister, born just after the family moved to Tennessee from South Carolina. Mary and most of her probable brothers migrated to the same vicinity of Hot Spring County, Arkansas. Mary was (probably) born in or near Cuba Landing, Humphreys County, Tennessee, which is now under the Tennessee River due to the flooding caused by a dam.

BOWLES

This is the TOP_BOWLES section.

Our gr gr gr grandmother Rebecca Ann Hall Bo(w/l)les Pilant Sims
turns out to have had the maiden surname of Hall according to
her son's, our James Calvin "Jim" Pilant's, death certificate.

Mom noticed that on J C Pilant's Texas death certificate #17086
it says that his mother's maiden surname was HALL (not BOWLES)!

But at the time of her marriage she was Rebecca Ann Bowles ...

age BET 20 AND 24
Since our Rebecca Hall Bo(w)les married Travis in 1844 and was b ca 1820
she could have been married before between 1835-1844 to a BOWLES/BOLES?
Marital Status: Married to an Unknown Bo(w)les?
or else Mrs Rebecca Hall married a Bo(w)les and our Rebecca was adopted by him?
It seems a bit late in the life of our young Rebecca for an adoption,
however, so we vote that it is more likely that she had a previous marriage.

OUR WILLIAMS-HALL FAMILY
